History of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
234 IXL Road. Campbellford, ON K0L 1L0

In 1886, a cemetery was laid out on high land on Concession 7, Lot 10 owned by the Rev. R. B. Denike. The cemetery was privately operated by him until his death in 1912. The first burial was Mrs. Nelson Simmons, the former Jane Finkle of Meyersburg.

Melvin McComb took over the management of the cemetery in 1922 and continued until 1947. In that year, a cemetery board was formed following a meeting held at St. John's United Church on July 15, 1947. Representatives were present from Campbellford Council: Mayor J. Ernest Ayrhart,  Seymour Council: Reeve Melville Wight and Alfred E. Bennett, Seymour East Women's Institute :Hilda Hume, Seymour West Women's Institute: Ruby McCulloch,  John Storie, Rev. G. N. Maxwell, F. W. Burgess, Grace Payne, Harry Free, Pearl McComb,  P. Blythe Nelson, G. G. Stephens, Dr. H. O. Richardson, Arthur Armour, J. C. Anderson, F.W. Wood, and W. F Scott. It was decided that the Cemetery Board be known as Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Board. It is interesting to note that the Honorary Chairmen were J. Ernest Ayrhart, Mayor of Campbellford and Melville Wight, Reeve of Seymour. Other elected officers were:

Chairman: Rev. G. N. Maxwell
1st Vice:    P. Blythe Nelson
2nd Vice:  Grace Payne
Secretary: Pearl McComb
Treasurer: F. W. Burgess

At a subsequent meeting on July 21, 1947, it was reported that Mrs. McComb, the present owner was prepared to accept $2000 in cash and a receipt for $150 for perpetual upkeep of the McComb plot for the transfer of the cemetery to the new board. The official transfer of the property occurred August 1, 1947. The issue of trying to collect perpetual care from current plots which had not required this service was a huge task for the new board. In March 1949, the Board approved the erection of a vault.  J.A. Thomson was contracted to do the excavation and Wilfred Spencer for the concrete work,. Grace Payne and Pearl McComb continued to build the maps of the sections and the index card file. It was emphasized that the vault was for the use of all denominations, not only those to be interred at Mt. Pleasant. The attractive front entrance which was stuccoed, steel door and a new retaining wall improved the appearance immensely. The interior was wired for electricity. Additional land was purchased from Alex Merrill in 1955. The large Mount Pleasant sign placed at the front of the centre road was donated by Mrs. Lucille Teasel of Picton.
